Diamonds are mined from volcanic shafts deep in the recesses of the earth and are usually found in Central and Southern Africa.  They are made when carbon-containing materials are exposed to high pressure and temperature for a long period of time.

Although black diamonds have been around for a long time, it is only in the last few years that they have started to be marketed and promoted, making them extremely fashionable.

While black diamonds are becoming more popular, they are not seen often nor do many people consider having black diamonds set in rings.  This is probably due to the fact that the black diamonds dont have the glittery sheen that is apparent with white diamonds.

Of all the colours of diamonds, black diamonds are considered to be the most striking and rare, making this a very expensive and unique piece of jewellery to own.

Many believe that black diamonds are not real diamonds, however, the fact remains that black diamonds are the most genuine and rarest of diamonds.

The Four C's of Black Diamonds

The four C's are the most important factors to consider when determining the quality and value of a diamond.

While colour, clarity and carat are largely as a result of natural formation, the cut of the diamond is wholly man-made.

The Cut

Do not confuse cut with shape.  The shape is the outward appearance, but the cut determines the fire and brilliance of the stone.  Like other colourless diamonds, black diamonds can be cut in just about any standard cut style.  The round brilliant cut and princess cut styles being the more popular for the black diamonds.

The Carat

The weight of all diamonds is measured in carats.  An important fact is that black diamonds are heavier than the colourless diamonds.  The carat weight of a black diamond is more than that of a colourless diamond, therefore a black diamond may appear smaller than a colourless diamond of the same carat.

The Colour

The appearance of black diamonds can come in shades of green, grey, black or midnight black.  The colour can range from being dense to translucent.  The uniformity of colour saturation determines the value of black diamonds.  The dark and midnight black colours of the black diamond are the best.

The Clarity

Diamonds may have inclusions, cracks or other defects present in the stone, therefore the more free from defects, the more the clarity, the more costly the stone.  The defects prevent the free passage of light through the diamond.  Not all defects are visible to the naked eye.  The clarity of the black diamond is an important factor to consider when determining its cost.
